Long Term Strategies for Happiness

Each one of us strives to achieve happiness throughout our life. Defining what happiness means to us is generally a difficult task as our definition of fulfillment can change radically over time. However, regardless of what the concept of happiness means to us, we should never leave happiness to chance. Developing long term strategies for happiness might seem like an awkward idea at first but the truth is that without having some sort of strategy happiness is a lot harder to achieve.

Happiness depends on several factors that can be different for everyone. While our external environment does have a certain influence on our happiness level, most of the factors that determine our bliss are within our reach. Our level of happiness depends mostly on the control we feel we have over life circumstances.

Generally, people with a high level of self-esteem tend to happier because they believe they have the power to influence every aspect of their life for the better. Each individual has the power to alter the circumstances of his life as long as he chooses effective strategies to make the necessary changes. Here are a few long term strategies to help us achieve happiness:

Develop a supportive belief system

Our belief system is an essential factor that determines what actions we take to make our life better and therefore developing a belief system that supports is one of the first things we need to take care of in order to achieve satisfaction.

The belief system is developed from a very early age based on our values, the perception about our own strengths and capabilities and the feedback we get from the people around us. Our belief system can either serve us our hold us back depending on the how well it is developed.

In the early stages of our life the belief system is mostly based on the feedback we get from parents but as we start to develop as a person our belief system starts to change as well. We have the power to change our belief system if we feel that our current belief system doesn't support us.
Our belief system can be altered by letting go of self-imposed limitations, realizing our our unlimited potential and being aware of our strengths and weakness without feeling ashamed of them and by using positive affirmations to change our beliefs. Changing our belief system is usually a complex process that might require a lot of time yet it is one of the most important steps we can take to achieve happiness.

Don't settle for anything less than you deserve

Humans are habitual creatures and as a result they unconsciously fear change regardless of the nature of the change. This is the main reason why many people choose to maintain mediocre relationships, settle for jobs[/link] that are far below their true potential or are unable to let go of habits that no longer serve them or that are downright harmful.

Making the necessary changes in our life and resisting the urge to settle and embrace comfort and convenience might be one of the most difficult things we have to do but at the same one of the most rewarding experiences we can have.

Set challenging goals

It might be surprising to find out that most people feel dissatisfied with their lives because the goals they set for themselves are too vague and too small. Many people fail to achieve their goals either because they don't have a clear idea of what they want or their goals fail to excite their imagination and as a result they are not able to tap the motivation they need to achieve their life long dreams.

Many people are afraid to step out of their comfort zone and try to avoid taking risks because of their fear of failure. They often settle with the current circumstances of their lives and try to make a living instead of designing the life they really want for themselves. The key to happiness is setting challenging yet realistic goals that can be achieved by taking consistent action. It is essential to establish deadlines for your goals in order to have clear idea of your progress.

Practice random acts of kindness

There are countless studies that suggest that those who regularly perform random acts of kindness are much happier than those who don't engage in such activity. Since all of us strive to have important contributions and have beneficial influences in other people's lives, the results of these studies are not surprising.

By shifting our focus from analyzing how much we receive and focusing on how we can influence other people's lives by performing acts of kinds our live becomes richer and as a result we tend to be happier. By learning to give without constantly analyzing what we get in return we can become impossible to manipulate.

Since giving becomes a conscious and voluntary choice we are no longer concerned about other people's actions. Moreover, since the law of attraction works in our favor, people are more likely to reciprocate and a beneficial circle starts to form and more satisfaction is brought to our life.
